Wax Seal FAQ's
Can you mail letters with wax seals?
In short: Yes!
You can post letters and invitations through the mail. we have tested this on many occasions when sending letters with Australia post. You will need to take several things into consideration when mailing letters with wax seals.
-
- Use modern. flexible sealing wax like those we sell through Bounde.
- For wedding invitations consider placing your wax sealed envelope inside a larger envelope for protection. This can prevent any potential scuffing that may occur due to the machinery the mail passes through.
- Wax seals add to overall thickness of your letter, thick letters (over 5mm) can have an increased postage fee.
How many wax beads do I need to make a wax seal?
3-4 wax beads per wax seal. For larger wax seals you will require more.
How do I make a wax seal?
In short:
Melt 3-4 wax beads in a wax melting spoon. Once the wax is the consistency of runny honey, pour the wax onto the envelope or wax sealing mat. Allow the wax to simply pour from the wax melting spoon onto the envelope, gift or mat. There is no need to move the spoon around. As quickly as possible gently press the wax seal stamp into the centre of the wax pool. Allow 60 seconds for the wax to completely cool and set hard before removing the wax seal stamp from the wax.
For more detailed instructions: We've written a whole blog post with a step by step guide to making wax seals and a video tutorial to show you how to make your own DIY wax seals. You can find the Beginners Guide to Making Wax Seals here.
How do I clean the wax melting spoon?
While the wax is still warm, use a wad of tissues or paper towel to carefully wipe away the warm wax. Be careful as the metal part of the spoon will still be very hot.
Do I need a wax sealing mat?
A wax sealing mat is made of heat resistant silicone and is ideal for making large quantities of wax seals for wedding invitations or for perfecting your wax seal making. The silicone mat allows you to make a wax seal separate from the invitation or envelope, you then attach them with adhesive tape of a spot of hot wax. This allows you to make a perfect wax seal on a flat surface. Any wax seals that don't meet your standards can be remelted, without affecting the finished look of your invitations.
Can I re-melt the sealing wax?
Yes, wax seals and excess wax can be re-melted. Providing that the wax is free of any other elements, such as paper, adhesive, paint, pen or dried flowers.
